Starting at Panorama
in Paralia Katerinis, there are numerous archaeological sites and places
of interest you can visit. Mt. Olympus is our first suggestion. The charm and awe it arouses combined with the charm of its varied natural surroundings made ancient Greeks believe that the 12 immortal gods and goddesses had chosen this specific mountain to establish their dwellings. Mythical Orpheus was born at the feet of the mountain, which was honored by most of the ancient Greek writers, especially so by Homer. Dion is also to be found there; it used to be the sacred city of ancient Macedonians, especially flourishing in the King Archelaos and Alexander the Great era. Vergina is also a short bus ride away. The tomb of Alexander's father, King Phillipos, together with more macedonean tombs, are waiting to give you the lifelasting thrill of the sight of their golden diadema, a masterpiece of goldsmithing of all Ages. You can also visit the Rocks of Meteora, a monument of Nature, with the monasteries unbelievably clinging on their top. Panorama hotel is a fine starting point for winter excursions as well, for example, letting yourselves surrender to Mt. Olympus' wild charm skiing on its slopes, or paying a visit to mountainous Elatochori (a 40 minutes' bus ride away). |
